Alex has been developing some strange tastes in the food that he likes. We noticed in Maine that he liked tomato based foods, spaghetti sauce and the like. This isn't the best thing for him because of its acidic nature, which could be bad because of his reflux issues. So, his occupational therapist (OT) recommended we cut the tomato juice (V8) with some heavy cream to sooth out the acid. So, we gave it to him, and he seemed to like it. Then, when we took Alex to a Japanese restaurant, we noticed that he liked Miso soup, so the OT thought that maybe he would like other asian flavors, so she got out the soy sauce. To add some more nutrition, she got out some apple and rice cereal mixture. So, she started mixing things together, V8, cream, apple and rice cereal with cinnamon, soy sauce, and eventually some worschestser (sp?) sauce, and low and behold, he liked it. Go figure. The OT says that in Alex's case, he needs some strong flavors to make him interested. Most kids know that eating is a way to solve the hunger problem, but Alex hasn't had a chance to learn that, so we need to make eating fun to get him to do it.With Alex, his eating patterns generally go in cycles. He'll eat something very well for a while, and then taper off over the course of a week or two. So, I guess we need to keep finding new ways to keep him interested. What's next? Curry?
