We went to Albany Medical Center today for our first meeting with Alex's new pediatric surgeon (the guy who'll do the dilations). We figured out a few things. First, Albany is only about 40 minutes away from our house, as opposed to the more than an hour that it took to get to Hershey. Second, the part of Albany where the hospital is is really pretty, and has a bunch of museums and parks, and some really neat architecture. There is a theatre that is shaped like a big, covered satellite dish and is apparently referred to as the "Egg". We are looking forward to taking some time to explore. Third, the new doctor, Dr. Cohen, is really nice. The docs at Hershey were great, but they often mentioned that Alex will probably soon need surgery to correct his reflux. THis doc (who used to work at Hershey way back when) made a point of telling us that he would only recommend that if there are no other options and the reflux is really bad. I, for one, was very relieved. I almost expected the new doc to put Alex on the schedule right away for that surgery. Anyway, his next dilation will be in a week or so, after he's met with the cardiologist up here, and had a swallow study done so that Dr. Cohen knows what to expect. (Of course, all of this is contingent on the insurance issues that I'm STILL working on...GRRR!!!!!)Other than that, we're so busy that I don't know if I'm coming or going half the time, and the house is a mess, but things are moving along. Perhaps I can get some rest this summer??
